Loughborough Foxes made it two wins out of two on Sunday when they came away from a visit to Watford Ladies with a 2-1 victory in the Women's National League South.
Watford, who were playing in the second tier last season prior to the league reorganisation, had also won their first match and were always likely to be a more difficult proposition for the Foxes than QPR had proved the previous week. Early pressure from the hosts saw Welsh international Helen Ward have an opportunity to open the scoring after five minutes, but she was unable to connect properly with her effort. Mid-way through the first half, it was the visitors who took the lead via Becky Knight. Laura Steele whipped in a free kick from deep which Knight met with a firm header into the top corner. Six minutes later the Foxes doubled their advantage. Good work down the right by Eva Rogers led to the ball breaking to Katie Lowder, who took a touch before firing over home keeper Amy Martin from the edge of the box.
Ward then came close to reducing the deficit but was thwarted by an excellent close range save from Amy Burle in the Foxes goal. Watford continued to press, creating three further chances before the interval, but the Foxes held firm to remain two goals ahead at the break. Rogers opened the second half well, creating chances for Lowder and substitute Charlotte Cooper, whilst having an effort of her own saved, and seeing another come back off the crossbar.
With thirteen minutes left on the watch, Watford got themselves back into the match when Leanne Bell struck a low shot past the unsighted Burle.
A potentially nervy finale was averted just two minutes later however, when Rogers slid a through ball into the path of Cooper who calmly placed the ball past the onrushing keeper and just inside the post.
There was still time for both teams to come close to adding to the scoreline with Ward for Watford and Young for Foxes both just missing the target, but Loughborough saw the game out to pick up their first ever away win at this level and remain top of the table.
The Foxes take a break from league action next Sunday, 2nd September, when they host South East Division One side Denham United in the determining round of the League Cup. Kick-off is at 2pm at the Loughborough University Stadium so come and show the team your support.
