Loughborough Foxes were unable to end the year with a huge scalp after falling short to higher tiered Leicester Women, 3-1.
Leicester City Women took an early lead as current England under 21 star Sophie Domingo lashed in an effort from the edge of the box, which found its way into the roof of the net, via a deflection. It wasn’t a surprise though, as the higher tiered opposition showed their class in the early stages.
Loughborough struggled to get a foothold in the game in the first half due to many wayward passes inviting pressure back onto themselves.
Conversely, Foxes came out of the break with a point to prove, and the equaliser came shortly after. Great play down the right wing saw Eva Rogers ghost past the left back and put a dangerous cross into the six yard box, which resulted in a Leicester defender diverting it into her own net - game on!
Foxes began to grow into the game & forced a number of last ditch challenges, one in particular saw Hicks brought down as she was bearing on goal following a lapse of concentration from Leicester. Unfortunately for Foxes, the referee wasn’t interested. However, within the blink of an eye the wind was blown out of Foxes sails by an absolutely outrageous strike from 30 yards from Leicester’s Paige Stewart. You will struggle to see a better goal all season!
Later Leicester were aggrieved with the referee as their striker tumbled in the box, but again he wasn’t interested. Leicester capitalised as foxes were pushing for their second equaliser of the game with a good counter attack and a low cross was turned into her own net by Victoria Brackenbury. The third goal put an end to the tie but it didn’t stop Rogers try her luck from 30 yards which forced an excellent save from Leicester’s Number 1.
Foxes will look forward to the new year as they turn their focus back to the league where they hope to leapfrog The New Saints into pole position and ultimately promotion into Leicester’s Women’s league.
